Rug Repair

Rugs are long-term investments, and with proper care and timely repair, they can last for generations. American Steamers offers professional rug repair services for all types of damage, from frayed edges and missing fringe to moth damage, worn pile, holes, tears, and structural issues. Our skilled repair technicians work with both handmade Oriental and Persian rugs as well as machine-made broadloom and area rugs.

Common rug repairs we perform include fringe replacement or tying, edge serging and binding to prevent unraveling, re-weaving of damaged pile sections, repairing moth damage, patching holes or tears, backing replacement, and color restoration for faded or bleached areas. For heirloom or antique rugs, we use traditional hand-knotting techniques to match the original pile density and pattern as closely as possible.

We often combine repair with cleaning, restoring a rug to both its physical and cosmetic best. See our rug binding, rug serging, Oriental rug cleaning, and Persian rug cleaning services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair a rug that has a large hole or tear?

Yes, though results depend on the size and location of the damage, as well as whether matching fiber and dye can be sourced. We provide an honest assessment before starting.

My rug's fringe is worn and falling apart, should I replace or remove it?

Both options are viable. We can re-tie or replace fringe to match the original look, or cleanly remove and finish the edge if fringe isn't desired.

Can you match the colors when re-weaving damaged sections?

We get as close as possible using matching yarns. On antique rugs, a slight variation in color is normal due to the aged patina of the original dyes.

How long does rug repair take?

Simple repairs like edge binding can be done in 1, 3 days. Complex re-weaving of large or antique rugs may take 1, 3 weeks depending on the work involved.

Is it worth repairing an old rug, or should I buy new?

For handmade Oriental and Persian rugs, repair almost always makes economic and sentimental sense. A quality antique rug repaired properly can be worth many times more than a new machine-made replacement.
