Urine Damage Treatment

Urine damage goes beyond a surface stain, when pet or human urine soaks through carpet fibers into the padding and subfloor, it creates a reservoir of odor and bacteria that surface cleaning alone cannot address. American Steamers offers comprehensive urine damage treatment that targets the problem at every layer: fiber, backing, padding, and subfloor.

Our urine damage treatment protocol uses UV light to map the full extent of contamination, sub-surface extraction to draw out urine from padding and backing, enzyme-based decontamination applied directly to the padding and subfloor, and finishing rinses to neutralize and deodorize. In cases of severe or long-standing damage, we may recommend removing and replacing the padding, which, while an added cost, is the only way to guarantee complete odor elimination when the padding itself is saturated.

This service pairs with pet odor removal and pet stain removal for complete restoration. For heavily damaged areas, we also offer professional consultation on whether cleaning or replacement is the more cost-effective solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if urine has reached the padding or subfloor?

If you can still smell urine after surface cleaning, or if the smell gets stronger when the area is wet, the contamination has almost certainly reached the padding or subfloor.

Can urine permanently damage carpet?

Yes, if left untreated, urine acids can bleach carpet fibers and permanently alter dye, especially on wool and natural fiber rugs. Early treatment gives the best results.

What if the subfloor is wood?

Wood subfloors can be treated with enzyme solutions and odor-blocking sealers. Severely damaged wood may require replacement by a contractor.

How long does the treatment process take?

A typical urine damage treatment takes 2, 4 hours, plus drying time of 6, 12 hours. More extensive damage may require a follow-up visit.

Is this service available for rugs?

Yes. Heavily urine-damaged rugs are cleaned at our facility where we have full access to all layers of the rug. See our Oriental rug cleaning service for specialty rugs.
