Hurricane Season Water Damage in South Florida: What to Do in the First 48 Hours

When a storm floods your home, the clock starts immediately.

In South Florida, hurricane season runs June through November, and every year we get the same call: a home took on water, the family waited a few days hoping it would dry on its own, and now there is a musty smell that will not leave. By then, a cleanup has often become a demolition.

The truth is, the first 24–48 hours after water intrusion decide almost everything. Here is what actually matters.

Why water damage moves so fast here

Our heat and humidity are the problem. Standing water does not just sit on the surface — it wicks into carpet padding, baseboards, drywall, and subfloor. In our climate, mold can begin growing in as little as 24–48 hours. The water you can see is rarely the real issue; it is the moisture you cannot see, trapped in the structure, that causes lasting damage.

The first 48 hours: what to do

1. Stop the source if it is safe. Shut off water at the main if it is a plumbing failure. For storm flooding, wait until it is safe to enter.

2. Kill the power to affected areas before stepping into standing water.

3. Get the water out fast. The sooner extraction happens, the less soaks into the structure.

4. Start airflow and drying. Move air and pull the humidity down. Surface-dry is not structure-dry.

5. Document everything with photos before you move anything — it helps with insurance.

What not to do

Do not assume it dried because the surface feels dry. Do not rent a shop vac and call it done — that pulls surface water but leaves the pad and subfloor soaked. And do not wait "to see if the smell goes away." The smell is mold starting.
